The dry-season reality
What months of 90°F+ heat does to a chimney crown
Concord runs long, dry stretches of temperatures well above 90°F through the summer, and a masonry crown sitting exposed to that heat expands and contracts until hairline cracks open from thermal cycling alone — before a single drop of winter rain ever falls. By the time the rainy season arrives, a crown that quietly cracked in July is already primed to let water straight into the masonry core.
Fall adds a second stress on top of that: Diablo winds, the hot, dry offshore gusts named for the mountain at the center of the county, can drive embers directly at a loose or corroded spark-arrestor cap during fire season. We check cap and crown condition together on every visit, not just the part that prompted the call.
A crown that cracks in July gets found by the rain in December — catching it first is the difference.
